Through the success of many alumni, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology has gained a reputation as one of hte United States' best undergraduate engineering and technology schools. It is not surprising that one of those successful alumns chose to donate the funding for a theatre and alumni center complex for the campus. Although the school has never developed the fine and performing arts as degree programs, it has gained national attention for the laboratory research they have done in show control technology, some of which has reached Broadway. In recognizing the Hatfields, the theatre plan had to achieve three separate objectives: bringing cultural events to campus, supporting student presentations and serving as a laboratory for the stage technology program. One unique feature of the space is a completely demountable stage flooring system to alow the use and testing of computerized show control technology and machinery.
